The bond of ubuntu – I am because you are – is the fuel that has ensured our success. Since our chance meeting in 1998, we have never wavered despite incredible odds. In the beginning, we simply worried if we could keep the lights on. But our early struggles were the pressure that created a diamond--The Ubuntu Model, our theory of change, that has driven us ever since. We have emerged from these past few years of the pandemic stronger, and more resilient than ever. Our impact is reaching further across the community than ever before.
We begin by working with HIV positive pregnant mothers to ensure a healthy birth. Once a child is born, we make a promise to be there from cradle to career. The plan is complex, but the dream is simple. A child enrolls in the Ubuntu School at age two and receives high quality, life changing support, education, and care for as long as she needs. This is what any parent would want; this is what every child deserves. This is not a luxury, this is a necessity. We are driven by our belief that leaving a child on their own is humanity at its worst. Raising a child, nurturing a child, truly investing in a child is humanity at its finest.
Children who took their first steps at Ubuntu are now graduating from our primary school. We must grow with them. This year we’re embarking on an ambitious plan to build the Ubuntu High School, which will allow us to grow one class per year until our current grade 5 students graduate. The completion of the Ubuntu School is the culmination of our cradle-to-career model, allowing us to provide the orphaned and vulnerable children of Gqeberha, South Africa, what all children deserve – everything, every day.
Today we have 2000 children on a pathway out of poverty. Thank you for believing in us.
The world’s poor face challenges that have deep-rooted causes, often spanning generations. The pandemic disproportionately impacted vulnerable populations and the full effects will take years to recover from.
Through a comprehensive system of education, health, and household support, we are placing 2,000 vulnerable children and their families on pathways out of poverty––from cradle to career.
A hungry student can’t learn math. A child can’t focus on homework when their mother is ill.
Ubuntu’s support does not begin or end in the classroom. We provide essential, wraparound services to every child and their family–because a healthy student in a stable home can thrive.

We have developed a group structure that allows Ubuntu Pathways NPC to leverage South Africa’s Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) initiative to provide sustainable funding for community upliftment. We operate multiple for-profit entities that generate revenue for our non-profit while helping corporates increase their B-BBEE scorecard.
Revenue from our B-BBEE ventures directly fund Ubuntu Pathways’ life-saving work.
