2021 Annual Report

Ubuntu Pathways breaks the cycle of poverty by providing South Africa’s most vulnerable children with what all children deserve - everything, every day.

A LETTER FROM THE FOUNDERS

DEAR FRIENDS,

We began 2020 looking at the challenges ahead - the future of the Ubuntu School, expansion of our campus, growth of all of our programs, and the way forward for the Ubuntu model.

Then, everything changed forever. We could never have predicted what was to come. We had to pivot and adapt. What began as a crisis has become the new normal.

Our team has shown incredible strength, resolve, and commitment to the children and families of Gqeberha. We are so proud of everyone who works on our campus. Despite the obstacles, we continue to achieve our vision: we built the Ubuntu Primary School, expanded the campus, placed hundreds of young people in jobs, and served our community with life-saving medical and psychosocial support. Our cradle-to-career model is stronger than ever and our incredible team has built the most effective COVID response in the Eastern Cape. During the worst of the crisis, we kept 30,000 people safe.

We have done more than we could have ever imagined, in unimaginable times.

But we are not done dreaming big. We have purchased the land where we will build the future Ubuntu High School - a place where every child in our care can find their pathway out of poverty. The completion of our educational campus will be the culmination of our cradle to career model.

Poverty is Complex

The world’s poor face challenges that have deep-rooted causes, often spanning generations. The pandemic disproportionately impacted vulnerable populations and the full effects will take years to recover from. This past year our community endured some of the highest death rates in the world, economic collapse, energy shortages, and violent political unrest.

But the Cycle is Breakable

Our 23-year history in the community prepared us to respond to the crisis. We had to pivot to keep tens of thousands of people safe, but our mission is the same, to provide vulnerable children what all children deserve - everything, every day. We are still creating pathways out of poverty. Our cradle to career model is saving lives.

AT UBUNTU OVER 2,000 CHILDREN ARE ON PATHWAYS OUT OF POVERTY.

Ubuntu is building a safer, stronger, more hopeful future.

In the face of crisis, Ubuntu emerged stronger than ever.

In 2021:

36,000

life-saving COVID vaccines were administered to members of the community.

30,000

people received monthly food packages during the height of the crisis.

students resumed receiving top notch academic instruction and psychosocial support.

young people were placed in jobs despite facing record unemployment rates.

of mothers living with HIV gave birth to healthy, HIV-free babies in a community where 1 in 3 pregnant women was infected.

We operate multiple for-profit entities that generate revenue for our non-profit while helping corporates increase their B-BBEE scorecard.

100% of revenue from our B-BBEE ventures directly fund Ubuntu Pathways’ life-saving work.
