A LETTER FROM THE FOUNDERS
DEAR FRIENDS,
In January of 2020, eager students streamed into the Ubuntu School. We greeted smiling parents and children, who had been with us since birth, proudly marching by in their uniforms. It was a promising start to what became the most challenging year in our history.
No one knew then that the world would be turned upside down, that hunger would threaten the lives of Ubuntu families, or that the South African variant of COVID-19 would sweep through our community and claim more lives per capita than perhaps anywhere else in the world. When the pandemic hit, Ubuntu did what we have always done - we adapted.
We transformed the Ubuntu Campus into a COVID-19 response center providing food security, remote and educational services, and critical PPE to tens of thousands of people. Our emergency response was critical in saving lives and stabilizing homes. While the crisis is still far from over, it became clear at the end of last year that we needed to prepare our campus for a safe return to school in 2021.
Today, the Ubuntu Campus is buzzing again. Our children are back in class and our community has begun the long road to healing. In Phase II of our COVID-19 response, we are coordinating the vaccine rollout in our community, providing strategic PPE to local clinics, distributing targeted food security, and fully reopening our campus so that our children have somewhere safe to learn and grow.
This work would be impossible without the heroic efforts of our frontline workers, our partners on the ground, and our supporters and friends around the world. Now, perhaps more than any other time, we have seen how truly connected we all are. The spirit of ubuntu – I am because you are – is evident in the resilience of our community and the generosity of our supporters.

A community in Crisis
The townships of Gqeberha (formerly known as Port Elizabeth) are among the poorest in the country. Our community faces challenges with deep-rooted causes that span generations.
When the pandemic hit South Africa, the impact was immediate. Families lost jobs, entire communities faced hunger and economic collapse, and the healthcare system was overwhelmed.

The South African government imposed a lockdown on March 26th, which caused unemployment to soar. Many people could not access or afford food.
Ubuntu’s food security initiative protected the most vulnerable in our community. We delivered food directly to homes, enabling families to stay safe, secure, and well-nourished.

Nearly every graduate of our program lost their jobs when the South African government imposed the economic lockdown. Large extended families depend on these young breadwinners.
Our team leveraged our employer network, provided travel stipends, and worked with each candidate individually to help them regain their livelihoods.
